Singer & Songwriter
In the very beginning stages of Kalima’s love for music, she would listen to the poetic verses of Lauryn Hill, and found herself wanting to use her voice as an emotional and thought provoking source of communication. In doing so, Kalima began writing music and poetry at the age of 10. Her late grandmother, Najiyyah Shaheed, was an independent fashion designer with a brand of African and Islamic clothing. Shaheed gave Kalima the platform to perform live at her fashion shows, banquets as well as the annual St. Pete International Folk Fair. Kalima continues to use her soft toned vocals in as an emotional outlet for herself and those who are moved by the words of inspirational lyrics.
Out of 17,000 applicants, and two days of competitive rounds, Kalima made it to the top 250 singers at the Los Angeles auditions for X Factor in 2013. In this last and final stage of the audition process, Kalima sang for X Factor’s executive producers.
