{"id":113,"date":"2015-04-17T01:09:54","date_gmt":"2015-04-17T01:09:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/digifolio.me\/andrewcaplan\/?p=113"},"modified":"2015-04-17T03:43:21","modified_gmt":"2015-04-17T03:43:21","slug":"uconns-stewart-makes-history-in-tampa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digifolio.me\/andrewcaplan\/2015\/04\/17\/uconns-stewart-makes-history-in-tampa\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn\u2019s Stewart makes history in Tampa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Published on\u00a0CrowsNestStPete.com April 2015<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She is the only player in women\u2019s basketball history to win three national championships and three Final Four Most Outstanding Player awards.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong>She was awarded the Associated Press Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons and is 18-0 in NCAA tournament games while wearing a Connecticut Huskies uniform.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, Breanna Stewart still hasn\u2019t met her own expectations.<\/p>\n<p>After defeating Notre Dame 63-53 in the 2015 NCAA championship game Tuesday night, Stewart reminded the world that her goal was to win four championships at UConn.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart said she is grateful for the individual accolades, but the team\u2019s success is most important to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that, you know, it\u2019s a cool feeling that kind of thing,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cBut the championship is most important. And as I said on the stage, I thought that Moriah should have gotten the MOP. \u00a0I thought the way she played was phenomenal these past two games. \u00a0And I think that people wanted to give it to me just because it was my opportunity to win three in a row.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stewart shot 4-for-8 on the night and recorded 8 points and 15 rebounds. She finished the 2015 Final Four with 33 points and 23 rebounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s really surreal, and I think I haven\u2019t had a chance to even think about that \u2014 the fact that I\u2019ve won three National Championships,\u201d Stewart said.<\/p>\n<p>It was a historical night for the program. Following the final buzzer, former UConn players, including two time WNBA and NCAA champion Maya Moore, ran onto the court to celebrate with the team and congratulate head coach Geno Auriemma on his 10th championship.<\/p>\n<p>Auriemma is just the third coach in any college or professional sport to win 10 championships. Phil Jackson (Bulls and Lakers) and John Wooden (UCLA) are the others.<strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Auriemma fielded questions after the game about his legacy and where he ranks among the greatest coaches. But he said he\u2019ll let other people decide that, and then directed the attention to his players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere just hasn\u2019t been a player like Stewy in the women\u2019s game in a long, long time,\u201d Auriemma said. \u201cSo for her to get three most outstanding players \u2014 as I said \u2014 she set her goal to do that.
