You are what you drink.
Yes it’s true.
Whether it’s Friday night and you’re ready to celebrate the weekend, or you need to unwind after a long week of exams, chances are you indulge in drinking alcoholic beverages at least once a week.
For those of you who don’t, props to you.
For those of you who do, I’m right there with you, and I’m sure you’re well aware of the cons.
Aside from possibly waking up with the worst hangover the next day, one of the biggest disadvantages to drinking is gaining weight.
Alcohol is high in calories, mixed drinks are even higher in sugar, and beer makes you feel bloated and gross. As a bartender, I’m well aware of how much sugar and sodium goes into some of the most classic cocktails.
After gaining the infamous freshman fifteen and acquiring a more mature taste for wine and liquor, I eventually swore off mixed drinks that are high in sugar. I did some research and realized that drinking doesn’t have to lead to weight gain or a headache; there are also plenty healthier alternatives to classic cocktails. You just have to figure out what you like.
Here’s what I like.
1) Tequila
Whether you like it chilled with salt on the rim or straight up, a little of Tequila goes a long way. Look for a quality tequila has “100% Agave” on the label. These tequilas are sweetened with agavina, a natural sugar that comes from the agave plant and triggers insulin production, lowering blood sugar. The fact tequila has significantly less sugar makes it safe for even Diabetics to indulge in. In my experience, tequila tends to curb my appetite, stimulating weight loss. It really doesn’t get much better than that
My favorite cocktail with tequila?
Tequila, lime, lemon, orange, saffron, and bitters!
2) Red Wine
While some may think that an obsession with wine is unhealthy, studies have shown that red wine is an exception. On average, one ounce of red wine contains 20 calories and even contains antioxidants, which not only help protect against heart disease, but also helps prevent the formation of blood clots. Red Wine is also made from red grapes, and the Resveratrol that is found in the skin of red grapes is believed to protect against cancer, type 2 Diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders.
My favorite red wine?
Meoimi Pinot Noir is my all-time favorite pinot noir! After a long day at work, I love to curl up on the couch with a blanket and enjoy a glass or two.
3) Other Hard Liquor (besides Tequila)
Whether you prefer vodka, gin, whiskey or scotch, the best bet is to either drink liquor on the rocks or with a clear mixer. Avoid juices, sodas, and other mixers that are high in sugar and opt for clear mixers, such as soda water, tonic, and water.
My personal favorite?
Vodka, soda, Saint Germain, and muddled berries!
All in all, the healthiest alternative to drinking is to not drink at all, however those of you who choose to indulge should take my advice and find the healthiest cocktail concoctions you can. The possibilities are endless!
P.S. Always drink a glass of water in between drinks! it enables you to not only pace yourself, but consume less alcohol as well, which means consuming less calories.
Cheers!
