Welcome.
My new book: Catching Sight, how a guide dog helped me see myself, is now available from Beacon Press! The book is the story of how I learned to accept my visual impairment. It is the story of Alberta, a yellow Labrador Retriever born at Guiding Eyes for the Blind, and how she grew to become my guide dog. This book covers a variety of issues including disability and ableism, dog cognition, interspecies relationships, and, of course, ethics. I wrote the book in collaboration with my Guiding Eyes for the Blind instructor, Graham Buck. Graham now runs a private business that builds relationships between dogs and their people, Buck’s Best Dogs.
The audiobook has been professionally recorded by award-winning narrator, Dawn Harvey. Beacon Press has chosen Catching Sight as its 2026 Americans with Disabilities Act Anniversary Book and spotlighted the book at the American Booksellers Association Winter Institute.
Initial reception of Catching Sight has been positive. Shelf Awareness called Catching Sight “a heartwarming story of human-animal connection and resilience.” Booklist described Catching Sight as a “moving memoir” that will make readers smile. A complete list of podcasts and publications relating to the book can be found here.
Watch for events hosted by bookstores coast-to-coast that feature me or Graham Buck, my collaborator and instructor at Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Graham now offers private training through Buck’s Best Dogs in Long Island. Events have been scheduled so far at Tombolo Books in St. Petersburg, FL, East End Books in Provincetown, MA, Henry’s Books in Spearfish, SD, and Fact & Fiction in Missoula, MT.
