Doctor Idol is a battle of the bands fundraising event featuring musician-physicians, developed and produced by Molly Hunsinger from 2009 – 2013 in Sarasota and Pinellas counties. Fashioned after the hit television series, American Idol, Doctor Idol connected local medical communities, garnered media attention for sponsors, raised thousands of dollars for nonprofit partners and inspired a documentary film called “Dr. Idol…Rx: Music!” co-produced by Hunsinger.

Nonprofit partners who benefited from the events included Florida Hospital Foundation, Feeding America Tampa Bay, Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota County, Florida’s Vision Quest and the Ear Research Foundation.

In 2013, the event was co-produced by the award-winning lifestyle publication, Sarasota Magazine. Custom digital and print promotional benefits were packaged with sponsorship opportunities including a special section published in the October 2013 issue of Sarasota Magazine, which generated more than $65,000 in new revenue from several first-time medical industry advertisers—a growth target for the magazine. Gulfshore Media executives showcased the success of Doctor Idol during a presentation at the 2014 City and Regional Magazine Association annual event.
